Medical Software Program
Should I chose medical science and research or programming or software development?
I’m going to college next year and I’m going to take all honors (algebra2 honors, English 2 honors, Physical science honors, world geography honors, geometry honors-I’m one of the few people in class that got it). Should I take medical or programming? I’m way better at math. Note the advantages, pay, employment. Educated answers please.
You sound like a person with lots of talent. That’s great. You have lots of choices.
You are mentioning two highly challenging fields that take a lifetime to master — medicine and software development. Either one will take at least ten thousand hours of doing it to get good. So, it’s really important to pick something you enjoy doing — because you will be doing a lot of it.
I made the switch from medical studies to software years ago, and it was the right thing for me. For me there was more creative scope in software. I probably would have had made more money if I were a famous doctor, but, hey, I didn’t like the politics of academic medicine very much. Plus, who says I would be famous?
Don’t worry about money at this stage. In medical training you’ll make forty cents an hour while you’re in training (exaggeration), and you won’t have any time to spend it (truth).
Everybody needs physicians, and software development can be outsourced. The practice of medicine is all about blood, guts, and bones, which don’t change as fast as technology. So those are a couple of things to think about.
Good luck finding your calling.
