Dealership Management Software
07 Saab 9-3 engine management software update?
I took my 07 saab to the dealership few weeks ago for a lose catalytic converter. I had been having sporadic issues with stalling. I know i need 60k mile service which will cost me $1200 to $1500. I was told they could fix the stalling by changing the spark plugs and doing an engine management software update. I’ve seen few cars have this update done but can someone explain why they need to do this. I’m not tuning the ecm so don’t see the point. I haven’t had any stalling issues since last visit. I just want to know is it necessary.
The software update is generally done when the manufacture finds a fault with their software after the fact and create an update to solve running/drivability problems.
This is common practice today. Manufactures do not bother testing working out issues before they sell a bunch of a model, they just wait until people bitch and complain about a problem, then they devise a solution, and make the adjustment/repair when a customer comes in for service. Sometimes it is done free of charge but most times they will “quiet charge” you while doing other repairs/service.
And by the way, $1200-1500 sounds like A LOT for a recommended 60k service. If I were you I would look into a SAAB independent specialist in your area instead of the stealership.
